Top 10 things you never knew about ferrets (but should if you plan to have one as a pet).

Ferrets are NOT cage dwellers. They need plenty of out of cage time daily.

Ferrets can not digest fiber - which includes fruits and vegetables.

Most ferrets are neutered/spayed and de-scented. Their musky odor comes from the oils in their skin and can be minimized with proper diet and frequent cleaning of their bedding.

Ferrets are NOT rodents, nor hamsters, guinea pigs or rats. They are in the mustelid family and are related to pole cats and minks.

Ferrets are highly social animals and they need plenty of human interaction, every day.

Giving a ferret a bath to “make him smell better” actually makes the musky scent more noticeable. It actually makes them produce more of the oils and musk that protects their skin.

Ferrets have a body temperature between 101°- 103°. Also they can over heat at 75 deg. so keeping them cool in the summer is a must.

Stress can make a ferret ill and may even cause death.

Ferrets need shots just like cats and dogs. Every year, rabies and distemper.

Ferrets need a special kind of veterinarian, one that specializes in exotic animals like ferrets.

Ferret Proofing Tips

As a general rule ferrets can get in to anything they can fit their heads in. We recommend if there is anything you do not want them getting in to make sure there is no more than a one inch gap.

Some ferrets can jump upwards of 30-34 inch barriers.

Also make sure nothing is near the barriers for them to catapult off of.

If you keep your windows open, make sure that they can not get to the window. Ferrets WILL dig a whole in a screen and get out.
